LASIK is a combination of two existing refractive procedures. Laser photo-ablation is used in conjunction with automated lamellar keratoplasty, which involves creating a thin-hinged flap with a highly sophisticated instrument called a microkeratome.

The flap is turned back and a refractive excimer laser is then used to ablate tissue from the exposed corneal surface. The flap is repositioned and adheres to the underlying tissue.
LASIK can correct large refractive errors with a faster recovery time. Virtually all patients visiting Queensland Laser Vision are treated using this technique.

Why do patients choose LASIK?
LASIK typically affords several advantages over PRK.
These include:
- Much less or no post-operative discomfort.
- Smaller chance of haze
- A shorter post-operative regimen (3 days to 1 week vs. 4 months of eye drops)
- Less time to be taken off work (1-3 days)
- Fast visual recovery
- The possibility of having surgery on both eyes on the same day
- Final vision is obtained within weeks rather than months
